Attention, Toronto commuters and residents! Buckle up, because the Gardiner Expressway is embarking on a journey of transformation. From lane closures to construction schedules, here's everything you need to know about the extensive reconstruction planned for this vital artery of Toronto's transportation network.

Background: Back in 2016, the City Council approved a comprehensive six-part Strategic Rehabilitation Plan for the Gardiner Expressway, aiming for completion by 2030. However, various factors, including supply chain challenges and labor shortages, may affect the timeline.

Construction Phases: The project is divided into stages, with the first phase completed between Jarvis to Cherry streets in 2021. Future stretches include Highway 427 to Humber River, York Street to Grand Magazine Boulevard, Cherry Street to the Don Valley Parkway, and Humber River to Dufferin Street.

Current Phase: Work on the stretch between Dufferin Street to Strachan Avenue, which started in November, anticipates completion by mid-2027. The construction will include lane restrictions, noise, and significant traffic impacts.

Special Considerations: During the FIFA World Cup, the lane restrictions will be lifted from May to July to accommodate the games. The project area is close to Exhibition Place, and the city is coordinating with event organizers for major events like the Honda Indy and the CNE.

Community Engagement: Public notices and community meetings will be held to inform residents about the project's progress and address concerns. Pedestrian access to the GO Station will be maintained, and efforts are made to minimize disruptions in coordination with Metrolinx.

Contract Authorization: The General Government Committee authorized the city to sign a contract with Grascan Construction Limited for the work, a decision made before the provincial government announced its plan to take back responsibility for the Gardiner and the Don Valley Parkway.

Ongoing Collaboration: Both the City and Province continue to collaborate on the upload of the expressway and the Don Valley Parkway, aiming for completion by the end of the year.

As Toronto braces for this significant infrastructure overhaul, it's essential for residents and commuters to stay informed, patient, and adaptable. While construction may present challenges, the long-term benefits of a revitalized Gardiner Expressway are worth the temporary inconvenience.

Let's navigate this road to renewal together, Toronto!

Yours in transit,
